Rio de Janeiro Carnival Balls

Carnival has Outstanding Parties with Great Tradition

Rio de Janeiro, as the City of Carnival, offers a selection of Carnival balls you really should not miss. You won’t have to spend a fortune to have a great time. Tickets to most balls will cost you around R$30 to R$50 ($15-20) and are available on the door. Exceptions are the two most famous ones in the luxury hotels Copacabana Palace and Gloria. Other great balls are in Rio Scala. Clube dos Caiçaras and the Hard Rock Cafe’s Kid’s Folia also organize animated costume balls for adults and children. There are more theme balls city-wide e.g. balls for singles etc.
Costumes are not mandatory, with the exception of a few balls. Putting on one will help you get in the right mood and will make the night even more special, though. Bear in mind however that Rio is the capital of Carnival and costume standards are very high.
A true Carnival ball features live music and samba rules the floors. The percussion groups are full of vigor and can be just as loud as vast loud-speakers in a night club.

A-Rod walks, Girardi on deck for Yankees '08

The Yankees have offered their vacant managerial position to their former catcher, Joe Girardi, which he will almost certainly accept. This news comes roughly 14 hours after Alex Rodriguez effectively severed his ties with the Bombers. Girardi is the best...

More waterfalls in Biliran

Biliran is an island province at the northern tip of Leyte. And just like Samar, it's connected by a bridge so there's no need for a boat ride. From Tacloban, I took a van to Naval which was about 3 hours away. I took some photos at the Biliran Bridge. They don't make infrastructure with character nowadays. If there's one thing I liked about Marcos, he made infrastructure grand such as the San Juanico Bridge, and not like the ugly, kitsch[...]

LA's Most Delicious Grilled Cows & Pigs [Los
Angeles]

bbqlamain.jpgOne thing Angeleno foodies like to go on and on about is how there's no good barbecue in LA. And, while I know we're not on par with Memphis, I do think there is some delicious grilled and/or barbecued flesh to be eaten in this city. It helps if you consider non-American barbecue, too. For now, let's pretend we don't know the difference between barbecuing and grilling, and take a gander at this list of Brazilian, Chinese, Korean, and vaguely European barbecuers, as well as a few American places that are as delicious as any in the South. Additional suggestions may be left to roast in the comments or marinated in the tipline.

Finding English-Language Movies in Berlin
[Berlin]

Finding%20English-Language%20Film%20in%20Berlin_new.jpgThere's nothing more comforting after a day (or week) auf deutsch, than the opportunity to regress back to the mother tongue -- whether you're an English-speaking tourist stumbling mutely through the city gesticulating to get what you want (or, more painful to see, enunciating and shouting in English in a mad assumption that this will help the non-English speaker to understand), or you're an expat speaking fluent German. Go ahead, take a break from Deutsch. It doesn't make you a bad traveler. There's no better or blissfully passive way to go about it than by watching an English-language film. But first to find an English-language movie. This little guide should help you navigate Berlin's foreign-language cinemascape.

Don't be thrown by the fact that movie theaters tend to use the German titles for films, even when they're going to be screening in English. The following list of abbreviations are often used to specify the version of the film being shown:

DF: Deutsche fassung (German version) - Meaning, that it will all be in German.
OF: Originalfassung (original version) - So, if it's an English-language film, it'll be in English.
OmU: Originalfassung mit deutschen untertiteln (original version with German subtitles) - Again, if it's an English-language film, it'll be in English.
OmÜb: Originalfassung mit eingesprochener deutscher übersetzung (the original version with German voiceover or dubbing) - So even English-language films will be in German.
OmE: Originalfassung mit engl. untertiteln (original version with English subtitles) - Then you'll be seeing an English-subtitled foreign-language film.

There's thousands of varieties, but only one will do -- matzah ball. Dive right in, rest you head on the pillowy matzah goodness, and be nourished by golden chickeny broth.
