REHM Apartelle, Tagaytay City

As I’ve mentioned in My Tagaytay City Story, we searched for a good place to stay in for the night. REHM is not within the junction with the lake’s view, it is along the route to Sta. Rosa from the Tagaytay Rotonda. From Tagaytay juntion (rotonda), take the route to Sta. Rosa, make a left [...]

PIONEER SQUARE - A SEATTLE TREASURE

Last night, I took a long walk through Seattle.  From Pioneer Square, up 1st Avenue to Pike, and then up the hill to the Northwest Film Forum on Capital Hill.  What a glorious walk, which is the best way to see Seattle.  This is a truly great walking town, so much to see.

Walking in the evening is the best time to stroll.  During the day, the energy of the city is faster and so is my own pace.  In the evening, the workers and people of the street are gone.  Actually, there were very few people out.   I had the time to be leisurely, so looked in every window and stopped frequently.  Seattle is a city "For Lease."  I've never seen so much unoccupied retail and commercial property downtown.

In Pioneer Square, I knew that Elliot Bay Books was moving, but seeing that Mitchelli's had closed and its fixtures soon to be auctioned was a real shock.  That hit me hard.  A moment later, I was thrilled to see that the J&M Tavern had reopened.  While never a favorite place, it's a historic room that I really appreciate.  I have a history there and historic rooms are one of my passions.  The J&M is hallowed ground, a gold rush era surviver.

I thought Pioneer Square looked great, actually.  I was really pleased to see it at 7 p.m. and in twilight.  It was easier to appreciate the beauty of the buildings without the distractions of the 9 to 5 crowd and traffic.  There is plenty to see here and a few "off the beaten track" locales that continue to be part of my repertoire.

With Mitchelli's close, dinner at Cafe Paloma became our dining spot.  Looking out Cafe Paloma's window provides a great view of a historic street, not unlike one you might find in Europe.  This is a nice cafe with a friendly, hands-on owner.  A good place for a rest and a glass of wine.  Around the corner, at the Flying Shuttle, Pattie found some wardrobe and jewelry upgrades.  That's a fun shop and a good reminder that  there is still good shopping in Pioneer Square.  Locals have stopped coming here and in my opinion, they are mistaken.  It's the locals that can turn this area around and there is good reason to do so.  For me, I like it here, still.  Pioneer Square has character.  Wish the same were still true of Belltown.

LYANDA LYNN HAUPT TALKS TURKEY ABOUT CROWS

Tonight, the Vashon-Maury Island Audubon Society celebrated their twenty year anniversary with a talk by writer, Lyanda Lynn Haupt, author of "Crow Planet."  Regulars said that it was as full a lecture as they had ever seen.  Every seat was taken and the walls were lined with Vashon Island birders and naturalists.

They were right to be there, because Lyanda provided us with laugh after laugh, while reading from her book and sharing her delightful stories of birds, crows, being a writer, living in the city as a naturalist. . .  Truly, she is a wonderful speaker.  Crows are a great topic and one that I don't know much about.  I'm reluctant to add yet another subject to my menagerie of interests, but I certainly will buy her book and look for future opportunities to learn about crows, ravens, and birds, in general.  On Vashon Island, birds are party conversation material (right up there with compost.)

Here, at the farm, we have plenty of crows and they interest both Pattie and I very much.  They don't caw for nothing and their sound will make me stop what I'm doing and take a look.  Often, their alarm tells me to look up for an eagle or a hawk, and they never fail to let the flock know when I'm adding material to the compost pile, which they love.

Crows are cool and so is Vashon.  What a great place!
