Vodafone Data Traveller Woes

I’ve used the Vodafone Data Traveller quite a lot over the last year. For either £2 a day or £10 a month, pay monthly customers get 25MB of data per day in most European countries.  A few days before leaving for Portugal, I contacted Vodafone to request that I go on the £10 a month [...]

bmi Takeover: Customer Service Costs Too Much

I was saddened to read about loss of 1200 bmi jobs today, due to British Airway’s takeover of bmi. I’ve flown with bmi from Edinburgh to Copenhagen twice in the last couple of years, as a standard passenger versus identified as a travel blogger, (although my ticket was paid for by third party on both [...]

Songkhran - Thai New Year

Songkhra ceremony of Song NamSongkhran , which occurs occurring at the hottest time of the year, will be from the 13th to the 15th of April) this year. The Thais will take a three day public holiday which will include April 16th and 17th (Monday and Tuesday).

Songkhran is the traditional celebration of the old Thai New Year. The holiday begins with Thai Buddhists visiting their local temple to perform the ceremony of Song Nam, where they sprinkle water on the Buddha images and on the hands of the monks as a good deed and to express confidence that the water supply will be adequate to last throughout the dry season.

In my office I was honored in a ceremony called Rod Nam Dam Hua, where the older men in my office had water poured over our hands and wish us luck for the up coming year. Yes, I'm that old.

In the streets, exuberant merrymakers will throw water at each other, and at you, by the bucket full. To add to the fun, talc is mixed with the water and may be daubed on your face. Songkran is the biggest and wettest party of the Thai year. Whether you are young or old, rich or poor there will be no escape, during Songkhran you will get wet!

Camarines Norte: Surfing & kitesurfing at
Bagasbas Beach, Daet

Bagasbas Beach in Daet, Camarines Norte is a good place to go surfing. But it's also popular for kitesurfing. A two hour introductory course would cost about Php2500. You could also opt for five or ten hour courses. If you just want to rent equipment, the daily rate for a complete set of kite with bar is Php2700.

After visiting Calaguas, we motored from Paracale to Daet, Camarines Norte. We first stopped by the town proper where the first ever Rizal Monument in the country can be found. It's actually part of the Rizal Heritage Trail. And you can get your Rizal Passports stamped at the local tourism office.

We checked-in at the Bagasbas Lighthouse Resort. Since the group was exhausted from the overnight trip in Calaguas, we decided to relax in Bagasbas Beach the rest of the day.

Visit the Ivan About Town FB page for more photos of Camarines Norte. Thank you very much to Camarines Norte Governor Edgardo A. Tallado and the Camarines Norte Tourism Office for inviting me to visit their beautiful province.

Its Looking Up in Myanmar for Real This Time

Myanmar, still called Burma as much as H.C.M. City is called Saigon, has made an amazing transformation lately. I’ve long been a skeptic of the whole premise that if travelers go to a place it will help “open up the country” and bring on better human rights. It never worked in a long list of [...]Related posts:
