New York: Birdbath, a "green" bakery

birdbathcookies.jpg City Bakery opened an eco-friendly bakery in the East Village last year that initially refused to decisively name itself. Is it Build A Green bakery or Birdbath? Whatever! I'm not sure if the name game or the bakery's flash website is more annoying, but another location opened three weeks ago in the West Village. The prospect of $2.50 cookies does not excite me, but I learned from the East Village location that riding a bike there gets you a 50% discount. Now we're talking! Unfortunately, this Birdbath only gives you 25% off. There are many pastries and a few drink options, but the most original item in there is the "what's your carbon footprint cookie", in a you-guessed-it footprint shape. Both bakeries are modestly-sized and constructed with recycled, renewable, reused, or vintage components; their "green" concept is more impressive than the cookies, however. Grab your bike, or a bike helmet and the phrase "yeah, my bike's down the street," and engage in some feel-good consumerism.

Athens: A Battle of Cultural Capitals: Athens vs.
Berlin

berlinvathens.jpgWe just heard (via Design Spotter) of a conceptual show starting next week at the Milch & Zucker Gallery in Berlin called "Athens vs. Berlin, From the Ex to the Next: A Capital Design Crash." The name alone sounds exciting whether you're a design freak or not. The gist of the show is this: three big time designers, two from Berlin and one from Athens had worked together years ago. They split up and are converging once again in Berlin to show off their design ideas inspired by their respective cultural capitals. The reunited the designers run the studios Greece is For Lovers (Athens), Daniel Weilder Product + Interior Design (Berlin), and Moritz Böttcher Produktdesign (Berlin).
