I am at Badami, and for the first time posting something when I am on the road. The journey yesterday night was mostly sleepless. The roads were smooth for first half of the way, but it was too early to sleep. In the second half, the sadists who designed[...]

Add to myYahoo! The nation came out in the thousands to say farewell to Cory Aquino last August 5. And we were there! We waited today for several hours, together with the throng of people, for the funeral cortege of Cory Aquino to pass by Sucat. The atmosphere was so electric! The nation was in total euphoria. I could not prevent my tears from flowing as I saw the cortege, not because I was sad that Cory passed away; but because I was happy Cory united the Philippine[...]

Karbi, a southern province on Thailand?s Andaman seaboard with perhaps the country?s oldest history of continued settlement has mountainous physical geography lining tranquil beaches ,broken only by highlands and plains on the mainland.
Limited access, until recently, has been the major restraining factor in the growth of Krabi?s tourism industry that has helped retain its virgin nature. The opening of Krabi Airport has changed this but lack of accommodation needs attention. This is a good enough motive to visit Krabi, before it gets crowded like its sister island, Phuket. The natural beauty of the region is unparalleled with high limestone cliffs, turquoise waters, white sand beaches and miles of trackless forest.
EXPLORING KOH YAO NOI
Our destination for the day was Koh Yao Noi, a large island in the middle of Phang Nga Bay, equidistant to Krabi and Phuket mainland. We had started from Krabi and as the water splashed from the rear of the speedboat, the hour long journey, on a warm sunny day, was soothing. The view of the horizon with small and large limestone cliffs emerging out of the sea, which we jet-passed made beautiful sights. On anchoring at the pier, we climbed on to a local tuk-tuk for touring the island. We passed through small local shops and all the government buildings along the small village. We later learnt that no cooking was done during the day in this predominantly Muslim island during Ramadan period.
The traditional way of life has allowed few changes to take place on the island, except for more motorbikes available on hire for 200 Baht for a half day.
A drive around its quiet roads reveals a place of true peace and simplicity. Wooden houses all along the roads, the cool shaded roads passing through many rubber plantations and the beauty of the mangrove with its trees standing in the middle of the sea are a few charms of this simple island.
CRABS AT KRABI
The Krabi Island boasts of a wide variety of crabs such as blue, purple, white and green in colour. The crabs are sorted according to their size and the best ones are available for 70 Baht per kilo. After witnessing the wide variety of crabs available, we proceeded to Long Beach.
A road encircles the island, mostly paved concrete, sometimes just a track, but driving is fairly easy. The beaches are mainly on the east coast
We stopped to peak in at the souvenir shop near the government supported unit that made artifacts out of coconut shells. Jewellery, boxes ,combs, paper knives and even pillow cases were made with neatly finished and carved coconut shells. They also sold some batik shirts and T-shirts at the shop.
Long Beach, also known as Phra-Ae-Beach is the longest on Ko Lanta, approximately three kms in length. The beach is beautiful with soft sand and no rocks, making it suitable for a good swim.
Some local shops have sea kayaks for rent as well as day trips to amazing Koh Hong, the stunning rock facing island.
SPA AT AO NANG
An open air massage by the beach side seemed the best way to relax after a day?s tour.Ao Nang beach situated along a west facing stretch of Phra Nang Bay, is named after an ancient mythical Thai Queen.
A headland to the east, featuring a large, majestic limestone mountain, protected by the National Park service, is a Centara Grand Beach Resort where we enjoyed our stay. The resort is situated in its own private bay called Pai Plong the only bay away from the main resort area of Ao Nang. The bay is accessible by boats operated by the resort.
Shopaholics can have a great time at Ao Nang night market with shops and restaurants etc, lined up.
Au revoir! We look forward to the place again whenever we need to relax away from the hectic city lifestyle.
