Spanish metropolis San Sebastian is full of gourmet restaurants serving excellent Basque food. One local specialty is the pintxo, a simple appetizer created by putting most anything (fish, peppers, potato, etc.) on a piece of bread. More broadly, pintxos can refer to most any tapas-style small plate. Espaņa-blogger Inthesity recently translated a San Sebastian pintxo guide into English, so gringos can take the same annotated gustatory tour enjoyed by Spanish readers. After the jump, our paraphrase of the translated guide.
Aloņa Berri: Winner of a Spanish tapas contest, Aloņa Berri is a local foodie favorite. They offer a tasting menu of pintxos, but ordering ā la carte is a "festival of flavors, shapes, and scents."
Astelena: Astelena is both good and spacious, a rarity with San Sebastian tavernas. Their menu is heavy on cold plates, but there is the occasional hot or fried pintxo. Favorites include king prawn crepes, beef cheeks in red wine, and veggies.
Bar Bergara: One of the most beloved and upscale pintxos bars in the city, the Bar Bergara serves excellent snacks and wine. The tapas are prepared precisely and are almost works of art; try the cuttlefish with onion.
Bar Txepetxa: The Bar Txepetxa is known for award-winning anchovies. They serve the salty fishes in countless ways with different accompaniments, sauces, and other fish. The place also has a raw bar, but we advise sticking to the house specialty.
La Cuchara San Telmo: The translated guide classifies Cuchara as having the best pintxos in San Sebastian. They change their menu often, featuring inventive dishes like foie gras with apple jelly or baby squid stuffed with spring onion.
Goiz Argi: Here the guide recommends Goiz Argi's fried prawns with vinaigrette (brocheta de gambas), meatballs with red pepper (bola de carne), and a number of small plates with anchovies, mushrooms, and cod. The space is intimate, so it's often hard to get a table.
Juantxo: The experts say Juantxo has the best little sandwiches in the area, as well as a tasty Spanish tortilla.
Kursaal: This pintxos bar is located in front of the large Kursaal center, so it's always packed during festivals and other big events.
Patio de Ramuntxo: The pintxos here are extra small and extra expensive, but it's worth at least one visit. They are frequent winners of the city's "pintxos of the year" competition.

Unfortunately for his many fans, Knut, the Berlin Zoo's star polar bear cub, is beginning to transition from super-cute cuddle critter to ursine killing machine. He's getting a longer snout and fatter haunches, all marks of incipient adulthood, or at least adolescence. His keepers are treating him a bit more gingerly than before, as his cheerful nips and swipes can rend flesh with ease now. One imagines there will be pressure to keep the cute Knut money train rolling for as long as possible, despite the bear's natural inclination to savagery. So if keepers start turning up with unexplained gouges or missing limbs, that's just the price of show business.
