The PeruvianTimes.com posted an article on Sunday stating that the Transportation Ministry of Peru has announced that Machu Picchu will reopen to tourists in as little as three (3) weeks. This comes as no surprise since Machu Picchu is Peru's leading source of tourism income.
After horrible torrential rains, floods and mudslides caused several roads, towns, bridges and the railroad to be damaged and/or destroyed it was speculated that it would take months before tourists would be able to reach the sacred citadel of the Incas. According the article on the Peruvian Times the head of the Transportation and Communications Ministry, Enrique Cornejo stated that he expected Machu Picchu to reopen within 3 weeks.
How exactly?
"Cornejo told Radio Programas Peru tourists will be able to bypass blockages between Cusco and Machu Picchu by traveling part of the distance by road and the rest by train. He said they will establish two temporary bridges to help bypass the 10 obstructions that are currently blocking access to the citadel." PeruvianTimes.com

A few months ago I was contacted by Tom Frost, the guy who runs Expat Alley after he somehow stumbled across my crumby little website in the vast ocean that is the internet. To make a long story short, he found it mildly interesting and asked if I wouldn't mind conducting an interview with him. A few weeks went by before I heard back from him, and when I finally received an email from him it contained a link to his site. There to my surprise was the interview on his site. Check it out! Also there are several other interviews available to read from other Americans living abroad.

Add to myYahoo!Koh is Thai for island, so no need to call it Koh Pha Ngan Island. It would just be repetitive. It’s pronounced “Ko Pahn Gahn”. The westerners pronounce it “Ko Pen Yang”, which I still don’t understand where they got that from.
How to Get Here:
From BKK: any travel agency has VIP buses to the southern islands. They leave twice a day usually and should cost you around 1000 baht or less if you’re good at bargaining. The most popular is the night bus, leaving around 10 or 11pm. If you’re doing all three southern islands: Koh Samui, Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Tao, I would suggest doing it North to South starting in Tao. If you do it that way, book the 6hr VIP night bus to Chumpohn and ferry from the pier. The ferry starts here travels to each island and ending up at Don Sak pier in Surat Thani. Back in the day, everyone had to take the 10 hr bus all the way to Surat Thani, but just in the last few years speed boat ferries have started running out of Chumpohn. However, if you want to start in Koh Samui, it might be better to start in Surat Thani. The ferry from Chumpohn to Koh Pha Ngan is about 3 hrs and can be a little bumpy sometimes. Word of the wise: do not eat an ice cream cone 10 minutes before jumping on the ferry boat. You will puke even if you’ve spent your whole life on boats. Personal experience talking here. The mini mart at the Chumpohn pier only has Thai flavored chips, ice cream and soft drinks available, so pack a healthy snack.
There are trains from BKK to Surat Thani, but they take longer. They will stop in each station, and sometimes for much longer than a pit stop to pick up passengers. I have heard of trains stopping somewhere for more than an hour. The train is much cheaper if you have more time to travel. They have nice clean sleeper cars available in first class as well as a dining car and social car.
Also, there are domestic flights from BKK to Samui if you can afford a plane ticket.
From Phuket/Krabi (West Coast): there are also VIP buses leaving from both of these locations. It should take you about 3-4 hours from Krabi and maybe 6 from Phuket. There are no trains, just buses.

Add to myYahoo!A few years back Google introduced the service known as Street View. They basically take car and drive through the city strrets and they take photos. This is linked up to Google Maps and this means that you can take virtual walks in cities like London, New York, Paris etc. But now the turn has finally come to my beloved hometown Stavanger
It seems like the photos have been taken on a pretty nice autumn day last year and you can walk around a lot of the streets in downtown Stavanger. So the only thing missing now Google is a good satellite image of the city center itself!! So start by a walk from the Norwegian Petroleum museum, Or maybe walk past the iron age farm, check out the beach at Sola, check out the view of the city from the bridge leading over to Hundvåg etc. Welcome to Stavanger…both virtually and in real life
